COVID Exception Policy

Effective 2/15/2021

During this unprecedented global situation, the AMCA Certification Board has authorized a limited set of exceptions consistent with the core mission to certify individuals in the allied healthcare industry. Under this exception, the following applies: 

  • Eligibility Requirements (Policy #300) 
    • Exception A: Applicants who have completed a training program in 2020 to satisfy the Option 1 or Option 2 eligibility requirement will remain eligible to test until December 31st, 2021. Candidate’s must complete their 1st exam attempt before the December 31st, 2021 cutoff. 
    • Example scenario: An applicant completed a training program in February 2020. Prior to this exception, the applicant’s eligibility only extended to 1 year past the date of course completion/graduation, which would be until February 2021. Under this exception, the applicant can still be deemed eligible to take the exam until December 31st, 2021.
    • Exception B: Applicants who have a minimum of 12 months of full-time work experience related to the credential anytime from January 2019 to present to satisfy the Option 3 eligibility requirement will be eligible to test until December 31st, 2021. Eligibility approval under this exception could include a lapse in employment and/or not be presently working in the field. Candidate’s must complete their 1st exam attempt before the December 31st, 2021 cutoff.
    • Example scenario: An applicant worked for 7 months as a full-time Phlebotomist from September 2019 to March 2020. The applicant was furloughed due to COVID in March 2020. The applicant got a new job in October 2020 and has been working for 5 months as a full-time Phlebotomist prior to the date of application in February 2020. The applicant has a total of 12 months full-time work experience as a Phlebotomist, however there was a lapse in employment. Under this exception, the applicant can still be deemed eligible to take the exam until December 31st, 2021.
    • Example scenario: An applicant worked for 3 years as a full-time EKG Technician from November 2017 to November 2020. The applicant is in-between jobs and applied in January 2021 to take the EKG Technician Certification Exam. The applicant has 23 months of full-time work experience as an EKG Technician from January 2019 to current, but the work experience is not immediately preceding the date of application. Under this exception, the applicant can still be deemed eligible to take the exam until December 31st, 2021.
  • Retake Policy (Policy #305) 
    • Exception C: Candidates who completed a 1st exam attempt and/or 2nd exam attempt in 2020 and were unsuccessful will have an extended retake window until December 31st, 2021. All remaining attempts for candidates who fall under this exception must be completed by December 31st, 2021. 
    • Example scenario: A candidate 1st exam attempt was in March 2020. The candidate did not have access to a test site, or their test site was closed for an extended period of time. The candidate only completed 1 out of 3 possible attempts in the allotted 1 year window. Under this exception, the candidate can complete the remaining exam attempts until December 31st, 2021.

AMCA certification program staff will consider these exceptions for all incoming Exam Eligibility Applications, Candidate Registration Applications, and Retake Registrations for exam administration occurring dates before December 31st, 2021.
